An Overview: 1907-1960

January 17th, 2009

Here’s an overview we did of the period of 1907-1960. Again, very general, but hopefully helpful.

Works of art discussed:
Pablo Picasso, Three Women at the Spring, oil on canvas, 1921 (MoMA)
René Magritte, The Human Condition, oil on canvas, 1933 (private collection)
Piet Mondrian, Broadway Boogie-Woogie, 1943-44 (MoMA)

We made this video as an overview of Western Art between 1848-1907 — obviously woefully incomplete, but hopefully helpful about some of the “big” issues.

Works Discussed:
William Holman Hunt, Strayed Sheep (Our English Coasts), oil on canvas, 1852 (Tate Britain)
Claude Monet, Boulevard des Capucines, oil on canvas, 1873 (Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City)
Vincent Van Gogh, Potato Eaters, oil on canvas, 1885 (Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam)
