In Advance of the Broken Arm

Marcel Duchamp, In Advance of the Broken Arm, 1964, fourth version, after lost original of November 1915 (The Museum of Modern Art)

Sal Khan and Steven Zucker discuss art as concept

The only definition of "readymade" published under the name of Marcel Duchamp ("MD" to be precise) [is found] in Breton and Eluard's Dictionnaire abrégé du Surréalisme: "an ordinary object elevated to the dignity of a work of art by the mere choice of an artist."

this was a nice video. however, i'm surpised at how quickly you dismissed the title as nonsense whereas, in fact, the title is what makes the shovel art. The object (the shovel) as presented is not an plain innocuous tool but an accident waiting to happen, filled with malice.
